Fall prevention

Steady on your feet – preventing falls in a targeted way

Falls are among the most common causes of accidents in older age. In Switzerland, around one in four people aged 65 and over falls at least once a year. The good news: targeted balance, strength and reaction training can reduce the risk of falling considerably.

We assess your personal fall risk with standardised tests and train exactly what you need for a safe everyday life – in Muttenz with the Sensopro, in Arlesheim with the Dividat Senso.

How it works

How we prevent falls

1 · AssessmentAssessing fall riskA conversation about previous falls, fear of falling, medication, eyesight and living situation, plus tests such as the Timed Up and Go, sit-to-stand and balance tests – based on the StoppSturz recommendations.
2 · BalanceStanding and walking steadilyTargeted balance and functional exercises in standing – safely guided and progressively more challenging.
3 · Strength and reactionReacting quicklyLeg strength, step and reaction training so that you can catch yourself in time when you trip.
4 · Everyday lifeSafe at homeA clear home programme and tips on footwear, lighting and trip hazards at home.

Scientific evidence

What studies on fall prevention show

Cochrane ReviewExercise reduces fallsAn analysis of 108 studies with over 23,000 participants shows that exercise reduces the number of falls by around 23%. Balance and functional exercises reduce them by 24%, and combined with strength training by around 34%.
Professionally guidedGreater effect with physiotherapyThe effect was greater when training was guided by health professionals – usually physiotherapists.
Step trainingFalls roughly halvedIn an analysis of 7 studies, step and reaction training reduced falls by around half and improved reaction time, gait and balance.
Body and mindMotor-cognitive trainingIn a Swiss study with the Dividat Senso, walking speed, step reaction time and attention improved – important factors for fall risk.

Good to know: Regularity is key. International guidelines recommend progressive balance and strength training at least three times a week for at least 12 weeks – and keeping it up afterwards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about fall prevention

Who pays for fall prevention?

With a doctor’s prescription, basic health insurance covers the physiotherapy. Afterwards you can continue training with a training membership or in a training group .

I have never fallen – is it still worthwhile?

Yes. Training works preventively, and in the studies people benefited regardless of whether they already had an increased risk of falling.

What is StoppSturz?

StoppSturz is the programme of the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) that helps professionals in Switzerland recognise, assess and reduce fall risks in people aged 65+ – including a checklist for trip hazards at home. More at bfu.ch/stoppsturz.

Can I also practise at home?

Yes, you receive a home programme. If you cannot get around, we can also treat you at home with a prescription – more about Home visits.

What should I do after a fall?

Have the fall checked by a doctor, especially if you have pain or dizziness or do not know why you fell. Take fear of falling seriously too – targeted training restores confidence.
